Alison Hunt has 30 years of post-qualification experience working in organisations and private practice; as a mental health practitioner, group facilitator, supervisor, clinical manager and clinical director. She trained and has worked in New York City and London. Following many years practicing in Central London, Alison re-located to Truro, where she continues to see clients for individual psychotherapy, family and couple counselling, and to provide clinical supervision for other counsellors and psychotherapists.
Alison's approach as a psychotherapist and counsellor has evolved over time and with experience, being broadly psychodynamic and relational, but incorporating elements of cognitive and dialectical behaviour therapies. Alison has extensive knowledge and experience of the treatment of substance and behavioural addictions, and uses motivational enhancement, behavioural , attachment theory, neurobiological understanding, mindfulness and 12 Step approaches in dealing with these issues. She has many years of experience working with people at all stages of the journey of recovery from addiction, particularly those who, having stopped the addictive behaviour(s), then find that they need professional help to deal with underlying issues. Alison is also experienced in dealing with work-related stress, depression, anxiety, and issues related to sexuality and identity.
Alison trained at New York University, and holds a Master’s degree in clinical social work (MSW), which is a core mental health and psychotherapeutic training in the USA. Alison has completed further training in clinical supervision and consultancy at The Tavistock Centre and the Maudsley Hospital; in Group Analysis at the Institute for Group Analysis; and in Attachment Theory at The Bowlby Centre. Alison's continuing professional education training includes: the treatment of substance abuse, eating disorders, and sex addiction; Cognitive Behavioural approaches; the treatment of depression & anxiety; mindfulness; and Mentalization-based Therapy.
In addition to her Truro, mid Cornwall counselling and psychotherapy practice, Alison also delivers training in the treatment of substance use disorders, co-occurring disorders and chemsex for organizations including: Grayrock Ltd., a specialist provider of CPD training for mental health professionals; Terrence Higgins Trust, WPF Therapy and Glenholme Healthcare.
" I aim to work in a way that is transparent. I do not believe that therapy is about 'doing' or 'fixing' something, rather that it is a collaborative process to together explore and find a way forward in life. The transformative power lies in the therapeutic relationship".
"People's choices in psychotherapy and counselling can be constrained by the limits of time and finances. We can make an agreement to work in a short-term, more solution-focused way, for an agreed number of sessions; or in a longer-term more exploratory way. There are certain issues that may not be amenable to short-term counselling or psychotherapy, and I will always explain why I am suggesting a certain course of action".
I adhere to the BACP Ethical Framework and Professional Code of Conduct.
