I have 30 years post-qualification organisational & private practice experience. I trained and worked in New York & London. As well as working in private practice, I have managed mental health and substance abuse services. I offer individual psychotherapy, family/couple counselling, & clinical supervision. I work to identify, activate and strengthen people's own internal resources. I combine exploring the origins of behaviours that have become self-defeating, with focusing on current coping strategies, support systems, and improving life in the present moment. Body/mind/emotions/spirit are interconnected, and attention needs to be paid to each.

My approach as a psychotherapist and counsellor has evolved over time and with experience, being broadly psychodynamic and relational, but incorporating elements of cognitive and behavioural therapies. I am experienced in dealing with work-related stress, life pressures, depression, anxiety, issues in relating to self and others, loss and bereavement, and concerns related to relationships, sexuality, identity and meaning in life. Additionally, I have experience of working with people at all stages of the journey of recovery from addiction, particularly those who, having stopped the addictive behaviour(s), then find that they need professional help to deal with underlying issues.

I trained at New York University, and hold a Master’s degree in clinical social work (MSW), which is a core mental health and psychotherapeutic training in the USA. I have completed further training in clinical supervision and consultancy at The Tavistock Centre and the Maudsley Hospital; in Group Analysis at the Institute for Group Analysis; and in Attachment Theory at The Bowlby Centre. My continuing professional education training includes: the treatment of substance abuse, eating disorders, and sex addiction; Cognitive Behavioural approaches; the treatment of depression & anxiety; mindfulness; and Mentalization-based Therapy.

In addition to my Truro, mid Cornwall counselling and psychotherapy practice, I have also delivered training in the treatment of substance use disorders, co-occurring disorders and chemsex for organizations including: Grayrock Ltd., a specialist provider of CPD training for mental health professionals; Terrence Higgins Trust, WPF Therapy and Glenholme Healthcare.

" I aim to work in a way that is transparent. I do not believe that therapy is about 'doing' or 'fixing' something, rather that it is a collaborative process to together explore and find a way forward in life. The transformative power lies in the therapeutic relationship".

"People's choices in psychotherapy and counselling can be constrained by the limits of time and finances. We can make an agreement to work in a short-term, more solution-focused way, for an agreed number of sessions; or in a longer-term more exploratory way. There are certain issues that may not be amenable to short-term counselling or psychotherapy, and I will always explain why I am suggesting a certain course of action".

I adhere to the BACP Ethical Framework and Professional Code of Conduct.
I am an Advanced Practitioner member of Addiction Professionals (formerly the Federation of Drug & Alcohol Professionals)
